Building your coping resources.

Resiliency Skill #1:
Build your coping resources. Exercise, meditate, practice yoga or some other form of relaxation on a regular basis. These activities (when practiced regularly) not only help you relax after a stressful day, they help make more impervious to stress in the future. (Remember what makes a resiliency skill different from a stress management skill is the resiliency skill helps you build an immunity to stress where stress bothers you less and less.

To join Melanie Holt's Stress and Anxiety Clean up - contact her at 801.718.9840.  Course begins next Thursday, October 3 at 11 AM.  Limited space.  6-week course, $20/group.

Nurturing your body in grief

Grief can take a toll on our body.  Dr. Alan Wolfelt (www.centerforloss.com) reminds us to "Be kind to your body.

- The physical problems encountered from grief can include physical and emotional exhaustion, uncontrollable crying, trouble sleeping, heart palpitations, and headaches.

-These physical effectcs are not inevitable, but in order to nurture your body, you may have to take a step back, slow down, and look at your physical needs.  You may need to take time away from work and focus on clearing your mind.  You must be kind to yourself by supplying your body with the good nutrition, water, rest, and exercise that you need.

Carpe Diem:  Do one nice thing for your body today.  Consider a walk, a healthy meal, a warm drink, or simply a hot bath."   Thank you, Dr. Wolfelt. His books are referenced often in the grief groups offered in our office at :  Resilient Center for Grieving Families, 1355 N. Main, Ste. 1, Bountiful, Utah 84010.

Life

There was a man who had a beautiful fruit orchard which he loved a great deal. He spent hours pruning and caring for his fruit trees, enjoying the harvest at the end of each season. In late winter, or what some may even consider the very earliest part of spring the man would enter his beloved orchard with a baseball bat in hand. He would size up each tree, and with the precision of Babe Ruth hitting a baseball out of the park would hit each tree. Beating a tree? What is the logic behind this behavior? The man explained beating his fruit trees put the trees under stress which in the long run produced stronger trees and better fruit. How often do we feel like the tree, and life feels a like the man with the baseball bat coming at us, relentlessly hurling blows we are unprepared to absorb? We cannot control what comes into our lives or even the emotions that are the result of events. But we can change how we relate to those events. That sounds easy enough, but trying to align our logical thoughts with unpredictable emotions can be difficult. Difficult, not impossible. Because life is constant it is important to remember to be kind to yourself. Take time to do things you enjoy. Self care is not selfish. Remember to breathe. That sounds funny, but when a person gets stressed out often breathing becomes short and rapid. Deep breathing promotes good health. Accepting that life is hard can be helpful. A line from Victor Hugo in Les Miserables states “Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.” Submitted by Melanie Holt, LAPC. To schedule an appointment call her at 801.718.9840.

The first step to change is to believe.

In the latest movie version of Alice In Wonderland the Mad Hatter tells Alice she has lost her muchness. What does losing your muchness mean? Some may describe it as losing authenticity. In the end of the movie after much searching Alice has an opportunity to reclaim her authentic self. She makes the decision to fight the Jabberwocky (a dragon like monster.) Although the fight seems impossible she recalls something her dad said to her as a child “Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” Alice then begins to list 6 impossible things that had been part of her reality during her adventures in Wonderland. Number 6 was defeating the Jabberwacky, which she successfully does. What we focus on expands. When the brain is focusing on positive thoughts it cannot focus on negative thoughts at the same time. Try making a list of 6 things you believe are impossible then, focus on those things. A few examples may be: I can accept that I am perfectly imperfect today. I can find 30 minutes to do something I enjoy today. I believe I am amazing today. I believe I can defeat my negative thoughts today. The first step to change is to believe. By Melanie Holt, LAPC. Wolfelt, Ph.D. Teenagers Mourn Too Each year thousands of teenagers experience the death of someone they love. When a parent, sibling, friend or relative dies, teens feel the overwhelming loss of a someone who helped shape their self-identities. And these feelings about the death become a part of their lives forever. Caring adults, whether parents, teachers, counselor or friends, can help teens during this time. If adults are open, honest and loving, experiencing the loss of someone can be a change for young people to learn about both the joy and pain that comes from caring deeply for others.

Grief Support in Bountiful, Utah.

Dr. Alan Wolfelt discusses healing in Ten Touchstones.  Touchstone One:  Open to the presence of your loss.  To heal in grief is to become whole again, to integrate your grief into your self and to learn to continue your changed life with fullness and meaning.  Experiencing a new and changed "wholeness" requires that you engage in the work of mourning.  Healing is a holistic concept that embraces the physical, emotional, cognitive, social and spiritual realms.

To suppress the grief, the pain is to condemn oneself to a living death.  Living fully means feeling fully; it means being completely one with what you are experiencing and not holding it at arm's length.  Philip Kapleau

Our next grief groups will begin in September.  Groups are $15/group session ($95 for 6-week group) and we will be offering groups for adults, teens and children.  Contact Melanie Holt, LAPC, 801.718.9840 or Becky Andrews, LPC, FT, for more information.
