With permission from a grieving teen, I share his picture of how to describe his grief. At times it is hard to put into words, rather easier to express through creative ways such as this:
If you know a teen who is grieving in our area, contact Melanie Holt, 801.718,9840 who will be leading the next teen grief group. Also, individual counseling is available.

Mothers who are Grieving
We had our annual Mother's Day Luncheon for mother's who are grieving the death of a child. I love these women and love to transform our group room into a place for a lunch and a time to remember them and their children who have died.
What Grieving Mothers Want for Mother's Day
By Renee Wood
Over 80 percent of the nearly 100 respondents in a survey of mothers who are grieving answered, "Recognize that I am a mother" to the question of how can someone help. In addition, nearly every mother surveyed wanted their loss to be remembered with a card, a phone call, a gift or a hug. Over half of the mothers surveyed considered Mother's Day to be their most difficult holiday.
In response to the heartfelt answers given by the survey participants, the Comfort Company has issued a list of the ten things grieving mothers want most for Mother's Day:
1. Recognize that they are a Mother: Offer a hug and a "Happy Mother's Day". Send a simple Mother's Day card to let them know you remember that they are a mother even though their child is not with them physically.
2. Acknowledge that they have had a loss: Express the message, "I know this might be a difficult day for you. I want you to know that I am thinking about you today." Removing the wall of silence gives a grieving mother permission to talk about her child.
3. Use their child's name in conversation: Saying the name of a child who has died is like music to a grieving mothers ears. One mother suggested, "Say his name and ask me my fondest memory of him from past Mother's Days".
4. Plant a living memorial: This is a wonderful day to plant a tree or flower bulbs in memory of the child. This is something that will live on as a beautiful reminder in the years to come.
5. Visit the Gravesite: Many mothers felt that it was "extremely thoughtful" when others visited their child's gravesite and left flowers or a small pebble near the headstone.
6. Light a Candle: Let the mother know you will light a candle in memory of their child on Mother's Day.
7. Share a Memory or Pictures of the Child: Give the precious gift of a memory. One mother wrote that the "greatest gift you can give is a heart felt letter about my child and your most lovely moments with them".
8. Send a Gift of Remembrance: Many mothers suggested appropriate gifts of remembrance that would bring them comfort. These items included: an angel statue, a piece of jewelry, a memory box, a memorial candle, a picture frame, a library book donation, an ornament, memorial poetry, anything personalized with the child's name or a date, books on grief, a garden stone or a toy donation in the child's name.
9. Don't try to minimize their loss: Avoid using any cliches that attempt to explain the death of a child. ( "God needed another angel.") Secondly, don't try to find anything positive about the loss ( "You still have two healthy children" or "She's in a better place").
10. Encourage Self-Care: Self-care is an important aspect of the "healing the mind and spirit effort" according to several mothers. Encourage a grieving mother to take care of herself. Give her a gift certificate to a day spa or any place where she can be pampered.

Nurturing your body in grief
Grief can take a toll on our body. Dr. Alan Wolfelt (www.centerforloss.com) reminds us to "Be kind to your body.
- The physical problems encountered from grief can include physical and emotional exhaustion, uncontrollable crying, trouble sleeping, heart palpitations, and headaches.
-These physical effectcs are not inevitable, but in order to nurture your body, you may have to take a step back, slow down, and look at your physical needs. You may need to take time away from work and focus on clearing your mind. You must be kind to yourself by supplying your body with the good nutrition, water, rest, and exercise that you need.
Carpe Diem: Do one nice thing for your body today. Consider a walk, a healthy meal, a warm drink, or simply a hot bath." Thank you, Dr. Wolfelt. His books are referenced often in the grief groups offered in our office at : Resilient Center for Grieving Families, 1355 N. Main, Ste. 1, Bountiful, Utah 84010.

Grief Support in Bountiful, Utah.
Dr. Alan Wolfelt discusses healing in Ten Touchstones. Touchstone One: Open to the presence of your loss. To heal in grief is to become whole again, to integrate your grief into your self and to learn to continue your changed life with fullness and meaning. Experiencing a new and changed "wholeness" requires that you engage in the work of mourning. Healing is a holistic concept that embraces the physical, emotional, cognitive, social and spiritual realms.
To suppress the grief, the pain is to condemn oneself to a living death. Living fully means feeling fully; it means being completely one with what you are experiencing and not holding it at arm's length. Philip Kapleau
Our next grief groups will begin in September. Groups are $15/group session ($95 for 6-week group) and we will be offering groups for adults, teens and children. Contact Melanie Holt, LAPC, 801.718.9840 or Becky Andrews, LPC, FT, for more information.

A few more holiday grieving ideas
Dr. Alan Wolfelt, continues
Do What is Right for your during the holidays
Well-meaning friends and family often try to prescribe what is good for you during the holidays. Instead of going along with their plans, focus on what you want to do. Discuss your wishes with a caring, trusted friend.
Talking about these wishes will help you clarify what it is you want to do during the holidays. As you become aware of your needs, share them with your friends and family.
Plan Ahead for Family Gatherings
Decide which family traditions you want to continue and which new ones you would like to begin. Structure your holiday time. This will help you anticipate activities, rather than just reacting to whatever happens. Getting caught off guard can create feelings of panic, fear and anxiety during the time of the year when your feelings of grief are already heightened. As you make your plans, however, leave room to change them if you feel it is appropriate.
Embrace your treasure of memories
Memories are one of the best legacies that exist after the death of someone loved. And holidays always make you think about times past. Instead of ignoring these memories, share them with your family and friends. Keep in mind that memories are tinged with both happiness and sadness. If your memories bring laughter, smile. If your memories bring sadness, then it's alright to cry. Memories that were made in love -- no one can ever take them away from you.
Lastly, Renew your resources for living
Spend time thinking about the meaning and purpose of your life. The death of someone loved created opportunities for taking inventory of your life -- past, present and future. The combination of a holiday and a loss naturally results in looking inward and assessing your individual situation. Make the best use of this time to define the positive things in life that surround you.
Remember that implicit in Thanksgiving, Christmas and Chanukah is the miracle of human survival and hope for the future.
Our Winter Grief Groups will begin in January. Contact Becky Andrews, 801.259.3883 for more information.

Grieving During the Holiday Season
Dr. Alan Wolfelt continues ...
Be tolerant of your physical and psychological limits
Feelings of loss will probably leave you fatigued. Your low energy level may naturally slow you down. Respect what your body and mind are telling you. And lower your own expectations about being at your peak during the holiday season.
Eliminate Unnecessary Stress
You may already feel stressed, so don't overextend yourself. Avoid isolating yourself, but be sure to recognize the need to have special time for yourself. Realize also that merely 'keeping busy' won't distract you from your grief, but may actually increase stress and postpone the need to talk out thoughts and feelings related to your grief.
Be with Supportive, Comforting People
Identify those friends and relatives who understand that the holiday season can increase your sense of loss and who will allow you to talk openly about your feelings. Find those persons who encourage you to be yourself and accepting your feelings - both happy and sad.

Healing During the Holiday Season
Dr. Alan Wolfelt, http://www.centerforloss.com/, states that holidays are often difficult for anyone who has experienced the death of someone loved. Rather than being times of family togetherness, sharing and thanksgiving, holidays can bring feelings of sadness, loss and emptiness. He offers some helpful suggestions:
Talk about your grief
During the holiday season, don't be afraid to express your feelings of grief. Ignoring your grief won't make the pain go away and talking about it openly makes you feel better. Find caring friends and relatives who will listen -- without judging you. They will help make you feel understood.
Our Winter Grief Groups will begin in January. Contact Becky Andrews, LPC, FT, 801.259.3883 for more information.

Mindful Grieving
Mindful grieving informs us to allow ourselves to feel what is there, without judgment. For me, there was sadness there and I needed to nonjudgmentally acknowledge it, feel it, and let it be.
